Modular Protection for a 25-Projector Ground Projection Installation

Large-scale 3D mapping installations often require creative solutions that balance performance, space, and cost efficiency. This case study documents the successful deployment of 25 Epson CB-PU2010W projectors, protected by 12 climate-controlled outdoor housings in a flexible, modular configuration – including enclosures housing one, two, and three projectors simultaneously.

The project involved a ground-level 3D mapping installation with projectors mounted on poles, requiring weatherproof protection that could accommodate multiple projector densities while maintaining consistent thermal performance across the entire array.

The Project: Ground 3D Mapping with Modular Housing Design

The installation called for a large-scale ground projection experience using 25 Epson CB-PU2010W projectors. The CB-PU2010W is a high-performance 10,000-lumen laser projector featuring 3LCD technology and a WUXGA (1920×1200) resolution. With its 360-degree installation capability and compact dimensions (545 x 436 x 164 mm, 16.8 kg), the projector is well-suited for pole-mounted ground projection applications.

The Challenge: Maximising Efficiency with Mixed Configurations

Ground projection installations present several technical challenges, particularly when multiple projectors must be deployed in close proximity:

ChallengeImpact
Space constraintsLimited pole-top real estate for multiple projector installations
Thermal managementMultiple projectors in a single enclosure generate concentrated heat loads
Optical alignmentAdjacent projectors require precise positioning for seamless image blending
Weather exposureAll enclosures must provide consistent protection regardless of configuration
Service accessibilityDense projector configurations require thoughtful service access design

The client required a solution that could accommodate three different housing configurations – single, double, and triple projector setups – while maintaining identical protection standards across all 12 enclosures. This modular approach would reduce the total number of poles required and streamline installation logistics.

Our Solution: Modular Climate Control Housings

We supplied 12 custom-engineered outdoor projector enclosures in three configurations:

ConfigurationQuantityProjectors per HousingTotal Projectors
Type A – Single[Specify quantity]1[Specify total]
Type B – Dual[Specify quantity]2[Specify total]
Type C – Triple[Specify quantity]3[Specify total]

Each enclosure was engineered to house Epson CB-PU2010W projectors with precision-matching for the projector’s dimensions (545 x 436 x 164 mm) and weight (16.8 kg). The multi-projector enclosures feature internal mounting frames that allow vertical stacking of projectors – a configuration supported by Epson’s own stacking frame solutions (ELPMB76) designed for vertical or horizontal stacking of multiple projectors, providing protection and easy handling during installation.

Core Engineering Features

FeatureFunction & Benefit
Modular internal frame designAccommodates 1, 2, or 3 stacked projectors with adjustable vertical and horizontal positioning
Closed-loop climate controlMaintains internal temperature within the projector’s optimal range (0–40°C)
IP54/IP55 weatherproof ratingProtects against dust ingress and water splashing – essential for ground-level installations
Integrated dehumidificationPrevents condensation on 3LCD optical blocks in high-humidity conditions
Pole-mounting bracket systemHeavy-duty bracket designed for pole diameters of 4–6 inches and above
Dual or triple-door access panelsAllows service access from multiple sides – critical for dense multi-projector configurations
Pressurised cable entry glandsMaintains seal integrity for power, HDMI, and control cabling
High-transmittance optical glass window95%+ transmittance with anti-reflective coating for minimal light loss

Each enclosure underwent thermal testing with simulated heat loads matching the CB-PU2010W’s power consumption (535W in standard mode) multiplied by the number of projectors in each configuration.

Installation: Pole-Mounted Deployment

The installation process involved coordinating 12 enclosures across the projection area. Key steps included:

  1. Site survey – Each pole was inspected for structural integrity and alignment with the projection grid.

  2. Mounting bracket attachment – Brackets were secured to each pole using heavy-duty U-bolts or straps.

  3. Enclosure attachment – Each climate control housing was affixed to its bracket and orientated for optimal ground projection angle.

  4. Projector installation – CB-PU2010W projectors were mounted inside each enclosure using the adjustable internal stacking frames. For multi-projector configurations, projectors were vertically stacked with precise alignment for edge-blended image projection.

  5. System testing – Each enclosure’s cooling and humidity control systems were verified, and projectors were aligned to ensure seamless ground imagery.

The modular stacking approach, similar to Epson’s ELPMB76 frame system, allowed for flexible installation – enabling vertical stacking of multiple projectors to increase brightness and add redundancy while providing protective enclosure during handling and operation.

Operational Results

After commissioning, the system has delivered consistent, reliable performance across all 25 projectors:

MetricOutcome
Thermal stabilityInternal temperature maintained within CB-PU2010W’s 0–40°C operating range across all configurations
Condensation preventionNo optical fogging or moisture-related issues reported across all 12 enclosures
